It turns out that Heather Urns has fire powers! I'm sure absolutely nobody guessed that. It's shocking, I know.

Also, we find out who that mystery girl on the cover was. Again, given the concept of the chapter and the events so far I'd probably imagine that that turning out to be pre-blue Heather isn't terribly surprising.

I'm kind of iffy on that fire in the third panel, though. It looks a little too solid and probably should have spread across the carpet or something. Live and learn, I suppose.

Anyway, I hope everyone enjoys, and be sure to come back on Saturday for more!

Yeah, I wasn't kidding anyone with this. It's been pretty obvious for a long while what Heather's power was. I was planning on putting a big reveal for it in a future chapter at first, but after it became pretty obvious I didn't even bother hiding it. So yeah, she can light her body on fire and emit heat like the Human Torch.

Really, it works out surprisingly nicely. Heather's power gave me the random idea to make her dad a fireman, just because, and that wound up playing into this speech she has over the course of this page and the next, and colors a lot of her opinion on Valerie being a superhero. Totally didn't plan that.

I remember being curious what Heather's design was going to be pre-Blue. I don't think many characters looked different before they got their powers, though I do have a few planned and in mind toward that. Heather likely changed the most appearance-wise though, but I guess that makes sense when she can light herself on fire.

Heh.... Actually, that's one bit where the Art Evolution came back to bite me. One thing I planned from day one was that Heather's hair would always be really, really short, almost like a crew cut, because it burned off whenever she ignited. Then in a flashback before she got her powers, you find out it used to be really long. But over time I changed the way I drew Heather and her hairstyle grew more and more pronounced and longer so the effect was lost.

Either way, I liked working with the design of Young!Heather. Remember showing the lineart to Martin and him immediately saying, "Yeah, I know that color scheme I'm going to use for her." Really comes off like the older one is charred and burnt up by comparison.

Heather not being immune to effects of her own powers is in sharp contrast to John who is, and at least to me Heather's red eyes were the biggest clue to her power's being fire(which is why I asked if Ozias had red eyes).
