Okay, after the black-and-white thing in the last flashback, tried to think of if there was a better way to handle them. Eventually wound up with this; imitating the art style of Silver Age comic legend Steve Ditko. .... Whose art I actually think aged really, really poorly and even for the time seemed like an uglier version of Kirby, but what do I know? The guy made Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, and The Question. Dude's a legend.

So yeah, that's our origin story for this guy. Where the suit came from and how it got attached. I tried to get as Stan-Lee-ish with the backstory as I could. Lab accident, tragic mistake on the part of the hero, some kind of permanence aspect that complicates the hero's life, these are all things Stan Lee loved in his comics.

Do especially love Martin's color job on this, in particular the suit. I just drew it as a swirling mass of colors in a glass ball, but he gave it this kind of mass-y feel, incorporating the red, blue, and black you see after it snaps out. Looks really alien and creepy. ^^

Actually, now's a good time to say this entire power-set was Martin's idea. I'd wanted to do a kind of Spider-Man parody for a while but the idea was really, really vague and I couldn't come up with a power that'd work for him. Martin suggested he have a knock-off of the Venom suit, and that colored the entire character afterward. It was one of those suggestions that makes everything fall in place.

This chapter's been a rather odd one to color for a number of reasons, and pages like this are a good part of it.

Yeah, in general if it wasn't obvious already, this chapter's a weird one. Here's where it really takes a swing into that direction.

You know, in retrospect we should be using the font we'll be using in WaR from now on for these flashback scenes. Would look a lot more comic-booky. Little later for that now; Blues won't be getting said font added to it until the next chapter, largely just to keep from being too jarring.

His grandparents must have hated him. In such universes, scientists are either villains, super villains, super heroes or cannon fodder.

Okay this is weird, just how much weirder is this chapter going to get, and in the second to last panel, unable to life outside, don't you mean unable to live outside?

Heh... Thanks, fixed it.

But the answer is a lot. A lot weirder.
