We're always trying to figure out the next step to improving the artwork and making it pop and draw out folks more and more. If you go back as much as a single year, you can always see the improvement. This one, though... Martin sent this back fully colored and I told him "It's like strangers made this."

The backgrounds absolutely pop in relation to the characters, giving an eye-catching but intriguing look. That last panel in particular I still can't believe we did. Just... Jeez, Martin's coloring blew it away this time.

Erm... Okay, yeah, uh... The story. Eheh... We get more of the Insomniac throwing things about Marvelous Man back in his face; I did always enjoy that stuff. A lot of MM's actions in the last chapter were written specifically so they could be deconstructed and referenced in this one.

Just went kinda nuts with the visuals here, doodling up whatever would look cool and interesting, but also trying to make it things that would tie into the attempt of deconstructing Marvelous Man and his motivations. Things that undermined and mocked what he was talking about. Hell, the bit in the second panel where he's a knight was just because I think of Marvelous Man whenever I hear the Camelot song "C'est Moi."

Two odd touches I really like; that penultimate panel was drawn in the linart to be a rope being strained and just about to snap (visual gag you see in a lot of manga). Martin I think colored it as two neurons in the brain, which is a really creepy and spooky way to take it. Like, that's what Insomniac is seeing as he looks for weaknesses.

The other touch is Insomniac's umbrella. ^^ Look close, it's got little sheep jumping over a fence on it. Just thought it was a cute touch.

This one's probably going to be a little weird for me to talk about fresh off having earlier colored the next page that has something a lot easier to really go into.

Still though, quite happy with how this one came out. Unlike the most recent WaR page I only used gradients on the backgrounds here, which is probably what's going to be largely the standard for awhile on both comics - the WaR one was done mostly to kind of cut my teeth on doing it on a full page but I think I've still got some work to do in terms of really getting the lighting right with it. Though I might end up soon experimenting with switching to doing the shading in that format or something, it'd be an easy enough switch to make and it'd probably look better than the kind of muddy style we have presently.

So yeah, backgrounds! The difference is most visible in the second and last panels, especially the last, but on the whole I do kind of feel like this has opened up some doors in getting some more complex effects and coloring going on. We're pretty much always looking for that next step in the art, seeking out new ways to improve upon things from where they stood previously. There's another shake-up of sorts we're really wanting to fiddle around with now while at it, but that one's a little more minor and is more on Adam's end than mine this time.

The length of this chapter feeling kind of weird to anyone else? It's been fairly lengthy and still has a ways to go, but to me it kind of feels like it's been running a good bit longer than it actually has. Might be because of WaR also doing a Halloween chapter at the moment that's eleven pages deeper than the Blues one is with both probably ending at around the same time, I dunno. That or because this chapter's heavily rooted in what happened in the previous one and is mostly an extension of the events there.

I like the umbrella. I also enjoy seeing Insomniac find a chink in the 'knight's armor'. Is there something truly deeper there in the relationship between him and Margret? Something enough to give him pause and shake MM. The Insomniac once again proves the might of the mind. Though he has already said he intends to leave. Suggesting this is mostly to help remind MM that he isn't as invulnerable as he thinks. And perhaps reinforce for him to address the one fact he cannot deny.

He is not the first adult blue blood. Which means somebody lied to him. Which means MM hopefully goes looking for answers. He probably won't, but one can hope he might start looking for an explanation. Regardless it's nice to see Insomniac breaking through that mental guard one more time.
