Eheh... My internet connection is down at my house and Martin has a convention this weekend, so we're both a little less than present. I'm uploading this from a place with free Wi-Fi. Actually did it last night but it was so noisey I couldn't type my comments. Quieter now, so see what we have to say.

Yeah, this is an aspect of the world I wanted to get into that we tapped at last chapter with Stickset's rant about studying super-powers. Super-powers probably WOULD result in a higher understanding of science and could see researchers struggling to form and change theories around what people can do.

I don't remember where the idea came for Blake to be a warlock. I think I figured that this prison would naturally have magically-empowered criminals in addition to ones with "Science" powers, and since Mariposa handles the latter aspect it made sense for Blake to control the former. From there he wound up having this intellectual, philosophical personality that was just a lot of fun to write. Naturally made it interesting to contrast that with Marvelous Man who, while not quite Dumb Muscle, isn't the most introspective of characters.

Also that line in the second panel about magical communities becoming less isolationist... That was a bit speculatory on my part but I think that's the only thing that makes sense. Hints dropped about this universe imply that the magical community has been in existence for hundreds of years, if not all of human history (Fontainebleu was a renowned mage before the French revolution, the Black family are implied to be descended from Conquistadors...) but it feels like magic being "a thing" is a recent idea. I figure that only within the last two generations has the existence of magic become an open fact but warlocks are still accustomed to being stand-offish and secretive. Blake being so open and friendly though, shows that this way of thinking could potentially be on the way out.

In general me and Martin don't want to do the Reed Richards Is Useless Trope. The world of these comics we plan to have change as things happen. Hell, part of the reason we're doing this chapter at all is we wanna examine what parts of this world are NOT like our own. Next page'll go back to Grant and see just how that relates to him....

EHeh... Jeez, that was a rant... Didn't think I'd go on that long. I really enjoyed doing the various inmates in this prison. In particular that guy who's apparently made of crows. The touches to this prison were a lot of fun all throughout. Even though that one massive panel was a massive pain to draw.

Yeah, honestly in both comics the hows and whys of superpowers and the ways the world is different from our own are territory that we'll be exploring very soon, both within this chapter for Blues and in the next one in WaR. One particular break from reality in the next WaR chapter is probably going to need a filler devoted to it beforehand to make it clear we didn't just not bother to research something.

But hey, that's WaR. For now let's talk about Blues. Do rather like how this one came out - quite time-consuming but there's a lot of flash to it, and some good background info while we're at it.

I feel like on the magical subject, it's probably really only just started to go mainstream and the world at large can still at times be somewhat antsy about it. That was the basis of the Ozias chapter in Black Princess, though I don't think I communicated it that well - he was flagrantly abusing his power and Sareena and Misty needed to stop him because of the image it was giving to the community. Think I might've said the same thing when he turned back up in WaR, not sure, but yeah.

We're two pages away from the 600th page, incidentally. Be sure to keep reading for when we get there!

I think he can turn his bodies into crows. Or just his innards.
