Honestly this one probably would have been a story page if not for Hurricane Delta ending up delaying production all over again; we're in a secure enough position at least that we will be able to update on Saturday. We're really sorry for all the problems lately and hopefully this will be the end of them.
These two were kind of odd ones to revisit since they're probably the two least drastically changed. Grant's does kind of stand out to me revisiting it though in all the little ways I think it could be improved; the colors are a bit too haphazardly assigned and the logo's too basic. Definitely think the current one is an improvement despite not actually being all that different.
Nicky's I remember struggling a lot with the color scheme on when it was redesigned; I like the red and pink look, but it's not the most appropriate for him. The current color scheme I think looks a lot better and he looks like less of a sidekick with it, which is sort of funny given that's still kind of the role he fills, particularly when paired up with Grant.
Okay, yeah, power is back on at my house following the latest hurricane to hit my hometown (this year) and now just hoping it's over. Just... Not gonna go into a rant, let's just say that this has been one of the more miserable highlight reels of an already-terrible year.
The filler is done with and we're back in business Saturday. Really sorry for the delay, we want to say thanks to all the readers for sitcking it out with us.
To help demonstrate that this was the last of these fillers (and to avoid playing favorites) we rushed out both Grant and Nicky for this one. Very cute shots of both.
Nicky's outfit grew on me a bit more as I look it over, but it doesn't really fit him. The pink and white does help emphasize that he's the youngest-acting member of the group, but they also make him look more cutesy and harmless. He's got too much pep for that, and I don't think he likes it when other members of the team don't take him seriously. So he's want something to emphasize that he's a big kid. ^^
Grant's costume really needed to evolve too... The logo is the biggest part, especially since a comic nerd like him would want a better part. The lighter color scheme especially didn't fit... Actually, I think the idea for the blue/white set-up was attempting to emulate Ikari Shinji's plugsuit. He's one of my favorite anime heroes and probably a big influence on Grant, so getting away from that was definitely for the best.... His design is also just a lot more competent in general; the way the cape connects to the shoulders more visibly and the cape having the feather design....
I really tried to design these costumes the best I could at the time, and over the years of working on the comic we just slowly got better and better at character design to get it right but... .... Heh. Actually, wait, that's wrong, I really didn't have that much to do with the final character designs. Martin was the main force behind setting them all up; I threw out ideas and he did a series of pictures for each kid that took each costume in a different direction (I only did one) then we sat down and discussed what we liked and hated about each design, and he took all those good elements and put them into a smooth, comprehensive look. Really knocked it out of the park with the whole line-up.
Heh. Sort of odd to look back on all the original designs like this, but there's not a single one that wasn't an upgrade. Hope everybody liked this look back; once again, we're so, SO sorry about this. With any luck the hurricanes are done with for this year.
