Heheh.... Yeah, you guys remember Margaret, the newspaper editor? The last time we saw her she promised she'd try to give the kids a fair shake and make sure they had a voice in the media when they did the right thing. Their behavior in the last chapter was the big event they needed to really cash in and get the goodwill they need to change their public image.
Margaret is a character I really liked using in the Marvelous Man arc, so it was cool bringing her back for this, and just having a general reporter character. Her baby self was just fun to draw too; plus we got to see (not be told, see), that people who left Sapphire City while the fog was in place turned back to their normal age, which was just something I wanted to show in the last chapter and couldn't work in.
Of course, the reason the first half of this page is so colorful and neat-looking is that it makes for a better contrast in the second half. Jake previously mentioned being visited by this guard, who always asks questions about the kids. This is just a sign that things are going to be coming to a head soon. Curious if anyone can figure what his phone call is about, since it'll be a bit before we find out. ^^
The image of the guard disappearing behind the bars was something I was convinced would be really creepy but came out just looking sorta silly. I was going to have him only visible in between alternate gaps in the bars, visible in some vanished in another, but he didn't cross over enough bars for the effect to really have an impact, so just had him cutting off.... I dunno, sorta looks neat, but wanted it to be really unsettling.
I knew Jake had to cameo at the start of this chapter, but keeping him out of sight is getting really hard. Especially since a LOT of the chapter is going to be discussing getting him out of jail. I do really like that "in shadow" shot in the last panel, though. ^^
I'd meant to mess around with the bar effect a bit and wound up forgetting about it - did a quickie edit right as the page went up so hopefully that looks a bit better but yeah, we'll need to practice stuff like that more in the future, try to get a better idea of how to convey that kind of effect.
But yeah, this is kind of an odd page to comment on since it's pretty different both from the usual fare and from the rest of the chapter, but I think it does a solid job of at least kind of laying the groundwork for what the rest of this chapter's going to be like. If nothing else I like that something as goofy as the last chapter is still being treated as a big deal in-universe since yeah, actually going through it that whole thing would be pretty horrifying.
Either way, do hope that everybody enjoys what's to come. This probably won't be the longest chapter in the world but we're hoping it'll be an impactful one.
