I feel like a took a lot of initiative on this cover, even compared to usual; the text was all something I tacked on fairly last-minute in coloring it, I did the shading, there was a lot of stuff I redraw on it to try to polish the proportions and other aspects up, I designed the chapter logo, I did the redesign of the main logo (though I've generally been the one designing the comic logos anyway)... Feels like a lot went into this one.
I'm really happy with the end product though. This is one we really wanted to nail. Admittedly looking at it again I think I could've gotten away with having heavier shadows on Jake, but having him as the point of light in the midst of this surrounding darkness I think works very well... if a bit undercut by the various lightly-colored frills around him from the cover format itself.
Still, I think this is the strongest challenger we've had to A Girl Named Dorothy for the best chapter cover we've done. I think a lot of Blues covers tend to come off a little aimless or overly cluttered but this one I think really hits what we were setting out for with it.
Hope everyone will enjoy the chapter to come. It's probably going to be a very long one, we have a lot of ground in mind to cover.
Heheh... Yeah, this was a really great final result on the cover that took a lot of doing from both of us. While I dunno if it's my favorite cover overall, it's easily the best we've done on Blues ones.
The main thing convey was that Jake was back, put him dead center as the main focus, and fill in the rest from there. I was picturing something like the cover to Identity Crisis #3, with the Night Terror in the extreme foreground, the kids in the background, and Jake in between them, grabbing the focus as he steps up to protect them. It looked crummy though, so I did the layout again. And again. Every time I re-drew the layout it was more and more dynamic with a more intense feel. By the time I got to the fifth version we had settled on this.
I don't normally re-draw and re-draw covers like that, but like we said, we really wanted this one to pop since we were wrapping up the arc. Plus the Blues covers always feel a bit crummy compared to the WaR ones, so trying to step up the game on that one. ^^
Like Martin said, he also came in with some work that just put it absolutely over the top. The ominous what-if questions in the background behind the looming Night Terror, the shadows sweeping over everyone, Jake having the spotlight on him like the one last symbol of hope... It's just so much awesome work from him that really made this cover pop. ^^ Hell, did the chapter title in the bottom left too.
It carries an air of fighting back against fear and hopelessness, and honestly loving it the more I read it.
OH! Something we should mention on the title; we had a few others in mind for it, like Blue-Eyed Hero to reference Jake coming back or a Bob-Dylan inspired title, but we ultimately went with Midnight Blue just because it was too perfect not to use.
