We actually drew the lineart of this page on Twitch. We're trying to start a podcast of Martin and myself talking about various anime, and I drew this lineart in the process. Anime we were talking about was Squidgirl you can get a look at it here.
Heheh..... Yeah, The Night Terror is definitely, DEFINITELY dead now. Hallelujah.
......
Trust me, we're going somewhere with this one, and this is the last time we have this sort of death-fake-out for the guy. We had to do it in order to segue into the next stage of the fight.
But yeah, there's a sudden, horrible shift in the feel of the fight. Not only has the Night Terror smashed Jake's spear, but has unleashed this bizarre stormy-cloud-mist onto the battlefield....
Again, the Night Terror is equal parts intimidtaing and a blast to draw, being so free-form and alien that we don't have to worry about consistency and can do whatever, but also struggling to work with such a shifting canvas. ^^ This is one of those pages that's just hammered home but the gradients and special effects from Martin. Just absolutely sells the mood and effect.
This page is kind of odd in that plans shifted for it as it was in the middle of being drawn; can't really go into specifics exactly but as originally written it was going to be putting one of the kids into the spotlight more than the rest, but then I had the idea to tweak it to do something else with the same idea. So that kind of led to some last-minute restructuring because we both much preferred that idea.
This one was actually kind of a nightmare to work on just because Manga Studio was being very uncooperative with it; this probably has one of the bigger layer counts we've done and the program was throwing a fit in trying to have additional pages open along with it, which made doing the eye detail and hair brightness difficult. Still, I am pretty happy with the end results and hope everyone's going to enjoy what's coming... even if it does read as kind of comical in the moment that the Night Terror dramatically got back up just to get killed again two pages later.
If there's one thing I've wanted to see, at least a little bit, it's for the kids to have an age-level recurring villain. I feel like this is a good set up to that potential future. A creature like the Night Terror, even if he's outright killed... doesn't go away forever.
Heheh.... I'm assuming you mean something that fits well for kids? ^^ IS a pretty cute scenario; the age regression chapter did make us realize how much we enjoyed leaning into the Kid element, where before I was afraid it'd be too gimmicky.
Am having trouble thinking of other ways to come up with kid-related characters without being gimmicky though. A boogeyman is a nice, easy method for it.
