Heheh.... Yeah, this one was sort of rushed to get out before the break and I'm amazed at how great it turned out. When I sent it off to Martin was afraid it was really lackluster but by the time he was done with it I just loved the effects. Especially the 6th panel, so many great little touches to make it more nightmare-like.

Part of the reason we're having Valerie be the first one to "escape" her nightmare is honestly because we've found the issue sort of boring. Martin had a better angle to take her nightmare but due to time constraints we went back to her having insecurities about not being able to control her powers. Issue is that it.... doesn't seem like much of an issue anymore. Honestly while most of the nightmares are going to be reflective of personal fears the kids will have going forward, with Val we're not going to bring up the "I used to not be able to control my powers" thing again. After this she's officially moved past that insecurity.

Helps that I just love all the little touches to how she looks in her "Meltdown" form and wanted an entire page to spotlight it front and center. I didn't even notice until tonight that the inside of her mouth is glowing too. ^^ We're wondering about having her do this look on-purpose just as a fashion thing because we love the look.

The 6h panel, as mentioned has all these great touches with Martin to make it pop, in particular the details on all the doors. ^^ That couples with the unnatural lighting and the fog just make it look so horrifying. Funny enough, that shot was inspired by a(n otherwise kinda crummy) BBC production of the play "No Exit." The play's about three people locked in a room in Hell; the critical moment of the play comes when the supposedly-locked door suddenly swings open and none of them can bring themselves to walk through. It's a great moment of Nothing Is Scarier, and I was specifically trying to re-create what they see when they look down Hell's corridors. Honestly I think I wound up lying Martin's version better. ^^

This one was kind of a whole weird process; even with the break we were having trouble actually getting it out the door (mostly due to Adam's work schedule being very hectic right now) to the point it was only actually finished being drawn last night and then I had to rush to color and shade it once I got up today. And yet I wound up putting in a bunch of extra stuff to go with it, mostly in that sixth panel.

It's funny, the writing on both of the left-hand doors wound up being covered up initially when I turned the other layers back on; Val was covering the first door and her dialogue was covering the second. She wound up being moved back and cropped a bit to accommodate that with the dialogue moving with her so we could get a proper look at those. Probably not hard to discern which of those two doors is which; the "Welcome" mat and graininess of the door on the right is supposed to signify that it's Wilma's but I don't think that came out as clearly as it could have.

This one also went through a lot of back and forth in actually writing it; as originally written Oz was a bit more indignant and telling Jake not to give her instructions on how to kill things, but I pointed out that he hadn't really actually done so and then that kind of led to talking things over back and forth a bit more until eventually landing on the dialogue she has here in the first and last panels.

One thing I do like about this is how much it kind of shows what Jake's thinking in approaching this; he's seen situations like this before and knows what to do, but I do feel like there's some pretty clear urgency and worry for them going on. I'd assume he probably went for Val first due to perceiving her as being the easiest to shake out of it since she's the oldest, or maybe she was just the closest to him at the time, hard to say really.

Reminder, we'll have a page as normal on Saturday but that will be the last one until the next Saturday. Sorry but we can really use the breathing room for a bit to get things more in order, though do hope that everyone is going to enjoy as we keep going.

Sometimes all you need to face your fears is the presence of one who is not afraid.

Pretty much, yeah. That's usually what I do when I freak out. ^^
