Feels really weird having been so long between updates. Do hope the wait hasn't been too bad on people, do appreciate sticking with us while we work on pulling ahead a bit.
Plus side we've been using the break thus far to try to really up our game in regards to the art. I don't know to what extend it shows with this page but some of what we've been practicing with is on display here, feel like particularly in the third panel. Might be kind of hard to gauge with everything going on within this page though, between all the special effects and the lighting and all that. One thing I think bares drawing attention to is Val's hand glow in the sixth panel; wanted to try something a little different with that, go with a more comic book-y sort of look to it. Kind of specifically patterened it here off of Shego. Sort of mixed on how it came out so feedback would be appreciated.
Actually pretty convenient how it worked out, having Val as the first one to start getting her head on straight. As we said before it mostly came out of dissatisfaction with her particular hang-up, but it works great both for bringing in Nicky quickly (this was always the plan for where he's mysteriously been, by the way) and for how much of a handicap it is that Valerie doesn't really understand how magic works and just finds it annoying.
Heheh.... Yeah, we were getting some good speculation as to why Nicky was so conspicuously absent from the nightmares, as we'd been keeping his hidden. There was no big twist, it was always going to be this gag of him being tormented by an evil dentist, while everyone else is dealing with heavy-hitting emotional issues.
Like Martin said, Valerie being the one to snap out of it first was due to us not being totally satisfied with her nightmare, but it worked out great. Once we got to writing her, we realized that her not being okay with magic meant she'd be a good one to have bounce off what was happening. When you think about it, the kids don't know the Night Terror had anything to do with nightmares, so this power comes off as really random. And Valerie's sort of the one least-likely to figure it out.
Plus I love that for as up-and-down Val and Nicky's relationship is, she still immediately drops everything and rushes into danger because she hears him screaming. ^^
I really just picked dentist because it was a cute, childish fear, but honestly.... It's no secret I've had extensive dental work done over the course of the comic (and am gonna need WAY more), and drawing a monster dentist was WAY more cathartic than it needs to be. I (currently) have a good dentist, but I've been to a BUNCH and I've had some really bad experiences, like too many to go into here. That giant ridged hook she's holding? Tell me that's not what it FEELS like they're using when they scrape your gums.
Nicky's also encased in ice just to add an extra little nightmare since it's previously been shown he doesn't like cold temperatures. And.... I've been to Dentist offices so cold that I'll go in with a jacket and still wish I had a blanket.
I wanted to try and imply that the dream-hallway is changing slightly as Valerie stands there; we can see it now goes out further instead of just sealing off. And the mat to that one door has changed from "Welcome" to "Go Away."
It was figured out what it means over the course of me typing these comments but we're specifically drawing attention to the frame of the door with the dollar on it with the line about "That flag."
