Heh... Yeah, now that Lore's back to having her own mind back in, we're treating ourselves to a lighter, softer page to try and take the edge off. Turns out Protocol's nightmare is.... sorta similar to Lore's in a few different ways. ^^
Since the page was lighter, only 6 heads, we experimented a bit with this idea of Lore punching through the panels to illustrate her punching out of her nightmare and into Protocol's. Was a little tricky but not as bad as we were expecting, mostly had to put Lore on her own layer above the panels and seal off the panels beneath her so we could still keep the barrier between panels transparent. Can still sorta see how to do it better, shouldn't have her being thrust forward quite so much, as is she sorta hides the barrier between panels, but still a neat thing to try out. Especially since I don't think it'd be hard to do it again.
Martin did the background in panel 4, this great, creepy depiction of Sapphire City as a hellhole. ^^ Likewise, we were both experimenting a fair amount with Nightmare!Protocol, as her lineart, coloring, and even shading were attempts to make her look extremely off; recognizably Protocol but definitely not the same person.
I feel dumb that this far into a chapter entirely about the kids being trapped in a nightmare realm, we're only now getting to a pinching joke. Eh, Andy's the most logical person to try it and he hasn't been around.
Yeah, this was a pretty natural direction to take this in, had to have Lore and Protocol meet up in this situation. Their dynamic has been one of the bigger things throughout this story arc so of course it had to get a spotlight in the climax.
Like Adam mentioned, I did the background on the fourth panel; things were a bit tight at the time and I'd volunteered to see how much of the page I could do while Adam was working on Friday's Wright as Rayne page, though all I actually ended up doing (besides the usual coloring / cleanup / gradients / all that) was that panel's background and part of Lore in the second panel. Not anything huge but think it looks good.
Panel break was an interesting experiment. Not exactly something you'll see us doing often but am pretty happy with how it came out, could maybe see there being other good contexts for doing something like that down the line. ... Did lead to the page having a bunch of extra layers but no huge deal really.
I've had the idea bouncing around for awhile now of doing the white eye thing with Protocol but always thought it looked kind of uncanny valley. Naturally given that this was a good place to do it.
