Yeah, we're cutting back to Jake and company holding the line against the Night Terror who has clearly been uh... taking some damage.
This was going to be the last update, but Martin pointed out that cutting back to Jake without hearing Vespi's plan just felt rushed. He wrote the last page's script for us, and this page was re-written to feel a lot better, being less foreboding and chopping out a lot of fluff. ^^
Gah, had an explanation for why Gibraltar was also MIA after the last cutaway but will have to work it in later. As is Telegirl's apparently wounded somewhere, but Gibraltar's still alive at least. It was more dramatic if Jake was the last one standing but.... I kinda did want to put over Marina as a threat. Eventually having her down for the count but able to summon one of her monsters as an assist for Jake felt like a fair compromise.
Jake's taking some licks, but I love the fact that he's using his shirt sleeve to tie the shard back onto the shaft of his spear. ^^ Just feels all, "Yeah, not going down" in his mode.
All I got, feel really tired.... Hope everybody enjoys~
Yeah, giving Marina a little extra screentime here was kind of a decision made after realizing that she doesn't really have the best fight track record to date; think the only fights she's actually won are the offscreen fight with Decay Conductor (though she did also have her beat in what we had onscreen before the kids derailed it, to be fair), beating random villains in the Peacekeepers' proper introduction, and an offscreen fight with Daryl in Wright as Rayne, while by comparison she's lost to Sareena and Misty, ran from Harena, was taken out during the Martina fight, and got possessed by Franklin. She could kind of use the extra shine a little bit.
As Adam mentioned this page (or rather original version of it, it was rewritten) was going to be the previous one, but it felt like an abrupt thing to cut to so the previous page was written up to better transition into it. Do think this fight's been a bit of a victim of some awkward pacing but do want to avoid just having it feel like it's just rushing to conclude or something, really it's just a very cluttered chapter which kind of makes it feel maybe a bit unfocused. Been very happy with how the chapter's been coming out in a lot of other respects though, and we've clearly still got a bit to go before we actually wrap up. Wasted on the Blue aside there has been kind of a move to make this story arc go by quicker than the Marvelous Man one did but I do think that occasionally comes with some sacrifices to pacing.
Either way, do hope everybody enjoys this one. Always nice to get an excuse to go more nightmarish with the imagery.
