Heheh.... And that's it for this chapter, folks. This was a... very fascinating one to write given how much the concept changed in the course of it, but on the whole still think it was a very fun ride. Jake's back with the kids again, all is right with the world. ^^
Well... Mostly. I wanted to end the chapter mostly hopeful, but Martin pointed out I still needed to have some plot hooks. So we do have Protocol there to discuss potentially getting the kids to become legal heroes and Jake mentioning all the hoops he'll have to jump through introducing himself to the kids' parents, getting the charges dropped against him, getting his job back, ect. ect. Lots to try and handle all at once.
There's a few things going on here. Jake understands that the kids need to make sure their biological families are okay, and is trying to give them space to be with their families without necessarily needing them around. I think toward the end he realizes that he's going to need to be more open about his role in their lives going forward instead of hiding it, and decides he should go along with the kids to meet all of the parents again. Couple of other minor touches I like are him respecting Grant needing paternal company (after everything that happened with his nightmare, Grant REALLY doesn't want to see his parents right now), without coming out and saying that his folks are awful.
Another minor touch I like; Protocol at first tries to address Jake with a "mister" which he immediately shoots down. He did the same thing when he first met the kids. Protocol also seems able to recognize the precise role Jake had with the group and understands he'd be the best person to talk to about future plans. .... Also, I think Protocol might be annoyed the kids only call her by her codename; she was probably really eager to get someone in that crew to call her by her actual name.
Jake looks so wholesome here it's increadible. I absolutely love his happy expression. The whole "half-closed eyes, calm eyebrows" thing is so specific to him managing to be visibly happy without every similing. To the point where I feel like he's only technically a Perpetual Frowner. Plus how cute he is holding Lore, and then sitting her on her feet.... Just a really great page showing how much he means to the kids. ^^
And that's a wrap. Think the process of putting this chapter together went into some unexpected directions even for us really; do realize there's kind of a lot of follow-through needed in it but we'll be doing that going forward into the next arc as opposed to right away.
Adam was actually pretty split on how to actually end this page. This note was one of three suggestions I made at that point, the other two ideas both tying back to things earlier in this past couple of chapters that will be relevant going forward, with us ultimately going with this one since it felt the most decisive and there were other hooks for the future within this page anyway (and Adam added more into the dialogue while shading it, for that matter). Kind of funny how that works out I suppose.
For those who read Wright as Rayne and picked up on the teases throughout this chapter you might be expecting the next one to be about Megan and Everett but no, not quite getting there just yet; the next chapter's going to be focused on some other matters, but we'll get to it when we get to it. Heh, hopefully given the title it lives up to whatever expectations people set for it.
We'll be going on a break as usual at this point, though the schedule might be a little in flux surrounding it; kind of remains to be seen but Adam has a lot going on right now. Still, we're going to try and keep both WaR and Blues running as smoothly as possible while we work through it.
