Heh... This page was actually Martin's idea; I didn't want to wait on having Jake tell the kids what the deal was, and he suggested having him lose his temper to show just how intense the news was. Absolutely love the effect for just how striking it is; the script didn't have him apologize after but I threw it in just because of how awkward it felt.
Even outside of that, Jake is really out of character in this page, showing a lot more emotion and awkwardness than he usually tends to. Again, does a lot to show how big this news is, though I do like him getting a bit back into form in the last panel. .... Actually the fact that he sounds more like himself after outright saying it makes it seem like he feels better just getting it off his chest.
One subtle touch I like about the outburst are Val and Grant's reactions to it. Valerie seems confused because she knows Jake enough to know this isn't like him.... But Grant looks weirdly resigned. I think Grant's used to having grown-ups randomly yelling at him. He even lowers himself to the ground.
Yeah, this felt like a pretty natural way to go, show Jake kind of lash out and show how he's genuinely pretty frazzled by this news. Feel like it takes a lot to surprise Jake but learning he's going to be a dad is certainly a way to get him off his game. At the same time though he's still grounded enough to immediately apologize, definitely think Adam throwing that in was a good touch.
Think it's a page that largely kind of speaks for itself, though am pretty happy with it. Am hoping everybody enjoys it in either case.
Heh. Val and Nicky are never going to find their tiebreaker, are they?
