This isn't what was originally gonna be page three; that one had a heavier script and this was done up on the fly just because me and Martin were both having a rough time and realllyyyy weren't up for getting it out on t. I was honestly gonna do straight filler before Martin suggested this as an idea for an additional little low-impact page and thank God for that because I would've felt really crummy falling back into that so soon after coming back from the break.
Funny enough he suggested this while I was at work and had just finished re-stocking a lot of parenting books. Jake is right to not want to talk about reading them; the books I've seen on parenting at my job have ranged from cringey to shmultzy to basically advocating beating your kids. Fortunately Jake seems to be angling for the few that don't check those particular boxes.
The dialog came out on the fly and I like how a discussion on Self-Portrait actually did wind up playing into parenthood. ^^ Also I'd been meaning to use Bob Dylan's quote about privacy in the comics for a long time so good to finally get that out.
Yeah, there was kind of a lot going on tonight - weather's been bad, I was really struggling to get any sleep, Adam was coming off of work - that was making getting the planned next page out on time look like more and more of a struggle, so the decision was made to do something lighter for the time being. Proooobably could've rushed the one out but it'd have been iffy and there was a pretty real chance one of us would lose power so it was better not to gamble on it.
I do think this page works pretty well despite its improvised nature though. It kind of helps put things over further and work as a greater examination of these two's dynamic and Jake's current mindset, and it's kind of just a fun bit of going into further detail on something that's long been an aspect of Jake's character but kind of secondarily. Think it worked out nicely.

It almost feels like we planned this, doesn't it?
