Woo, new chapter is here! And, lke a lot of the early chapters, I thought up the cover for this one! And the title for that matter.
Yeah, the fire thing plus the title are very much relevant to the subject of this chapter, though it is an action-free one where we don't actually see the group in costume or anything. Whole lot of speeches in this one.
You may notice some changes to the usual cover formula here - no black section at the bottom, group picture of our main heroes by the Blue Star Comics part, new pictures for the Featuring tab, the new logo... I threw together some templates for ideas on how to change up and personalize each comics' layout a bit more recently (which will likely see use in WaR and BP's case in their next chapters), but Adam was kind of iffy on my ideas for it due it having sort of a Silver Age kind of bent, so we decided to stick with the same basic idea here but just sort of clean it up a bit.
As for who that In This Issue girl is... Stay tuned. Also, be sure to take a look at Wright as Rayne in a little bit. We'll be posting something important shortly.
Heheh... Really do owe Martin for the cover idea and name. I had so much trouble thinking up a cover idea for this one, every single page was drawn and colored before doing this. Again, covers are usually a hard part for me.
The morality of what the kids do, helping people in danger, is a major focus of this chapter, so the cover works out nicely, the flames referring to more aspects in the comic than one. I was really impressed with the end result, especially with how the characters are so unique in design, you could tell them apart by their silhouettes. Something something Team Fortress 2 joke.
Like Martin said, there are a lot of speeches in these. Which... bugs me a lot since I'm not a terribly big fan of characters sitting back and monologing. Dialog is okay, since I love the back-and-forth, but whenever I did a page that mostly consisted of a single character standing around talking for extended periods of time, I felt really bad about it. Which is weird, since it comes up a lot in WaR and I don't mind getting an excuse to slack off in the art, but here it just made me feel like crap.
Fortunately, all the speeches, two in particular, I think are fairly strong and do a good job saying what needs to be said without going TOO overboard on wordiness. So I can sorta justify it to myself. Plus the chapter after this I have so much action planned, I'll need to cut muscle to get it to a manageable length.
Heh... But yeah, Martin suggested a Silver-Age-Style layout for the cover details, which... I wasn't exactly excited about. I'm not really a fan of gimmicky Silver Age stuff in general, mostly since DC never gets sick of running it down peoples throats, and I think in their case it's often to the detriment of their stories. Hell, I'm in the middle of reading a JLA/Avengers crossover now that came out in the late 90s that can't shut up about the Silver Age and is actually sorta written in the style of that era. Which works terribly. He did suggest the new logo, which I really love more than the old one. ^^
