There are certain moments in the comic where I'm hoping some emotion will be properly conveyed, or some atmosphere will come across just right, or something will just look really cool. Then, even though I may not have have too reasons to think it won't, I wind up totally floored when it does. This is one of those times.
Like, wow. Martin sent this back and I was just speechless. The shading, warmth, and darkness of the page are all conveyed just perfectly. You just get that sweet, homely, tired feeling. It's just utterly perfect. This and the page after it are some of the best-looking ones we've done in any of the comics.
Felt it really was important to get moments like this of the team just calmly bonding, especially after their first loss in combat. The different reactions everyone has come out nicely in this page and the next one.
Weirdly, this is the first page we've seen where the kids aren't wearing either their winter clothes or pajamas, so was sorta neat to figure out what they'd change into. Jenny and Grant were put into their Starchild and Rayne shirts as just another nudge about the crossover. Really liked Lore's Trixie dress so much that I felt bad she only got to wear it for two pages and you can barely see what it's supposed to be. She winds up spending the next chapter in it too to make up for that.
I was kinda curious if Lenore was gonna be there or not; she was in the script but was added there mostly as an afterthought, plus the headcount on this page was pretty high already. Went with her anyway and happy I did because d'awwww. ^^ Sorta been half-shipping her and Grant, though hardly sure enough about that to commit to it in the comic officially. Just having them snuggle up was pretty adorable enough on its own.
Does nicely convey the depth of the shading; I've slowly been learning how to give long, flowing shadows at nice and short, brief ones during the day. Does a good job conveying that Heather is the only source of light in the room. I dunno, still something I'm working at. Does make me wanna do more night-scenes since longer shadows are ironically easier to do than shorter day-shadows since I always worry if those are too big.
And here are Martin's Comments. ^^
Heh. Adam certainly had plenty to say on this one. Lemme see what I've got then...
It was a pretty baffling choice on my part to tweak the palette in this page, given the choices I made are drowned out and I need to turn several layers. Not a huge hassle or anything but a questionable choice.
God, distracted here. Not in too bad of a way, just making it hard to think much about the comics right now. I do love how this page came out though and hope everyone else will too.
Two pages still to come between now and the cover for the crossover. I can't wait to get the ball rolling on that. Internet should be long since on by that point too, extra reason to be pumped.
Aw no need to sulk Lore once Alex gets here you and your teammates will be getting lessons from a master, this is a wonderful page but Heather's bald head makes her look a little like a flaming light-bulb.
Heheh... Gladja like. ^^ The baldness thing was mostly to make it easier to draw and she seems to just lose her hair when she lights her head up. It's back when its extinguished, so dunno how that works.
..... Huh. Yeah, curious how that happened. I guess after fighting/playing in the snow all day, his feet were really cold.
