Okay, flashback here was halfway between just general 80s comics (notice how Angela and Firerain have 80s hair) and that one cartoon Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends. Originally was going to base it off Sam Raimi's Spidey films but when Dafoe!Gaston wound up looking more like 80s Joker I went that route instead. ... Yeah, it was hard coming up with distinct art styles for these things. Honestly think picking one I liked was harder than actually sitting down and drawing it.
If you're familiar with WaR you probably know about Gaston. Thought it'd be a neat idea for these flashbacks to have an established villain from this universe who's been operative for years to show up in one, and his name came up.
Anyway, Firerain and Power-Ice are obvious Expies for Firestar and Iceman, who had a cartoon with Spidey. Firestar I ironically drew to resemble Starfire (who in the comics had the most 80s design EVER), while Iceman.... Yeah, Top Gun joke. Couldn't help it.
You can tell this was going to be a Sam Raimi joke when I started the first panel because Angela's dangling. That's one thing Raimi couldn't stop doing; have people dangling from things. Like, constantly, constantly dangling.
Also, I based that scene with the tidal wave of "Chemicals" off that bit in The Simpsons. The "Goggles do nothing!" one.
I was hung up on this page for awhile and it created a bit of a backlog. Did eventually get to it, obviously, and blew through the pages after it pretty quickly, but this one I just took my time on.
Wound up being fairly time-consuming as you can probably get, due to needing to do the stuff on the wave of acid, having an all new palette for the flashback (which is the case for every flashback, but this one stands out on that), and a few other factors. Think how gaudy it is is part of it, there's a tight line to walk between making the colors kind of jarring but still making them look decent.
Even if Gaston does show up in WaR again donw the line - kind of a big if, there isn't much reason for him to, though we will be seeing his daughter again before too terribly long - no chance he'll be wearing that outfit, sorry.
"How many worst enemies do you have?"
"DON'T INTURPT!"
