Big thing about this page; it wound up part of some experiments Martin did about the shading. ^^ Much more detailed than usual, so we're very pleased with how it looks. You guys enjoy? Any things? We could really use feedback on this.
But yeah, obviously Jake had a plan for his arrest (look back at the panel before he "confesses" to Emma; wheels are clearly turning). The funny thing is that for the longest time we were gonna keep the kids (and the audience) ENTIRELY in the dark about what the plan was rather than going into detail so soon after it happened. The logical problem with that is that there was no logical reason for Vespi to not tell the kids once they met up. So rather than keep it under wraps, just had Vespi explain what Jake's plan was. Which you won't get to hear until Saturday, of course. Sorry, folks. ^^
I do like the bit of world-building you see about how different realms communicate and share ideas, especially with the idea of stealing major information from each other on a constant basis. I didn't want Valerie to entirely be dead-weight for the magical thing, and loved the idea of her geeking out trying to figure out how different alien races communicate with each other in secret. Was a neat nod to her being into science, and a good way of displaying the overlap those things can sometimes have.
Re-reading this page I actually really like Vespi's dialog, especially how she talks about Jake. Clearly fond of him but not afraid to blow off his concerns either. Given his personality, doubt Jake would even mind that much; I get the feeling Jake doesn't expect people to listen to him. I imagine he also trusts Vepsi's judgement enough to shrug this off.
For what it's worth the shading won't quiiiite look like this going forward; this is quite a time sink to do, so after this page (and a much heavier WaR one) we decided to scale it back a bit to sort of a soft version of this style that's easier to do. Don't think it should make for too jarring of a shift, but we'll see on that I guess.
So yeah, just some fun with Jenny, Valerie, and Vespi talking things over. Do like getting to do this stuff with Val kind of geeking out over otherworldy stuff like this, like how it simultaneously shows her intelligence while also making her look little kid-ish.
Like Adam I do enjoy getting this chance to sort of explore Vespi and Jake's relationship a little more by seeing her reaction to things. We'll be learning a little more about that before this scene's over with.
Oh, also, almost forgot! If you're eager for more with the Blues kids, take a look over at Wright as Rayne, Grant's presently featuring over there in a crossover chapter.
I do read this more for the story though. The graphics can tell their own story or plot at the same time and I do like it when scenery tells its own tale, so to speak. The scenery itself can be world building. Literally!
