Honestly, once we had to have the kids and the Peacekeepers interact for the first time, it was NOT fun to write. Their first meeting has to establish a ton of stuff right off the bat. We have to tell who the Peacekeepers are, give each one a name and explanation of their powers, we have to establish what they're doing in Sapphire City and why the need for a super-hero has risen since the Time Skip, we need to discuss stuff like how the kids have already met Marina, we have to go into how they each view the Blues kids.... Yeah, when I had to finally sit down and write this scene I was just praying it would be over soon.
This page is mostly just that fact-establishing. It goes into the actions of super-heroes in Sapphire City, mentions that the kids met Marina, and we see some of the differing reactions to the kids. I think all subsequent scenes with these guys are easier to get through now that all that baggage has been addressed.
I wanted at least one member of the Peacekeepers to be really condescending to the Blues kids and treat them like babies, and it wound up being Telegirl. Beyond that we see that Gibraltar likes kids but is also a bit soft toward them, Rex doesn't really see a distinction or modify his behavior due to their age, and Protocol looks logically at the way they should be treated and does so accordingly. Marina and Qrime Qure don't get much, but imagine Marina sees this just as a kind of job and Qrime Qure 2.... We'll get to her.
I like the idea of crummier super-heroes demanding protection money from locals like they're some sort of mafia group and fights breaking out over "territory" involving people they can exploit. Part of the idea is to show that if not held to some sort of standard the business would logically just fill up with ultraviolent scumbags who just want an excuse to fight people, lunatics who see themselves as above the law, or selfish jerks who feel entitled to whatever they want as long as they're allowed to think of themselves as "heroes" (i.e. Marvelous Man). It was a fun way of looking at the fallout that would result from Marvelous Man's defeat.
Funny, I actually kind of half thought earlier that the next page was the one going up here since I finished it off a day or two ago.
Yeah, after the last page kind of set the groundwork for talking to Protocol she doesn't actually get terribly much screentime within this page. That'll be addressed shortly, but kind of just a matter of her not being the most outgoing person in the world.
Of course, the big thing that stands out with this one is that we're not anti-aliasing the pages. It's a process we had struggled with for awhile in terms of finding a time-efficient way to do it. Recently we did figure out a method though and so that'll be the way going forward; is a bit more of a time and effort sink than the old way, but not really drastically so and do think it makes for much cleaner results. If you also read WaR you've already seen this in the past couple pages there, it's a little further behind at the moment.
Funny thing, I actually kind of meant in the lead-up to this in WaR having a line indicating Alex had met Protocol at some point and thought highly of her, but don't think it's come up.
It makes sense that the rookie hero with similarities to Miss Tickle would be perfect for that role, very interesting, wonder what's going to happen next.
In Matilda’s (as Protocol did address her by name last page) defense...they are pretty cute and Lore honestly looks pretty darn tiny when you consider how tall everyone else in scene is by comparison. I get Gibraltar is probably an outlier but Lore really just IS small...but she is also a kid. Kids have a tendency to grow vertically eventually. She can deal with being called little for now.
I also like how oblivious Rex seems to his faux pas! I honestly find it amusing especially how everyone’s like “Dude, language in front of the kids!” It’s oddly...I wanna almost call it cute or endearing in its own twisted way that he is so oblivious to his own use of language he needed to confirm. And confirmed by repeating said word.
And yeah. Unlicensed heroes and what effectively amount to a protection racket. “Hey! We beat up a shoplifter in the area so you better give us tribute and pay us for our services!” I won’t ask if they thought they could get away with it since clearly they did. But how did they think they could get away with it? I’m not the only one that hears ‘protection racket’ when they read about that bit right?
Yeah, I liked the idea of unlicensed heroes "asking" for donations for their services. I could see some people feeling entitled as long as they see themselves as heroes. I mean, they're providing a service... There's nothing wrong with them asking for something to help them get by, right? Since they don't get paychecks like licensed heroes do. I could just see it being an easy mindset to fall into.
But yeah, Rex's line was surprisingly fun, especially his reaction. ^^
