This has been something kind of building up on the backburner for a little bit - there was a mention in the blogs about how Rick was talked out of getting government funds to fix his wall and instead got a big payday from elsewhere? Yeah, that's where this comes in at.
Rick isn't quite as stupid as he seems here as we'll see in the next page, but still supposed to communicate that he's pretty dimwitted, though sure that's pretty much set in by now given everything we've seen out of him to this point.
Admittedly I'm pretty scatterbrained and zoned out so not sure how much to say beyond that, but do hope that everyone's enjoying thus far.
Actually, a funny aside - we recently edited the scripts to try to get to a point in the comics before Halloween, but now we're not sure if the reason we wanted to rush it is still going to happen. We'll see on that one I guess.
Heh... Yeah, it was set up that Rick is getting money from unscrupulous sources, and this is what that was referring to. It's been made clear that Mr. Star isn't the nicest guy, what with the transparent devil motif and evil air, and Rick's been clearly pretty brainless, hence him accepting the money without thinking about it.
I'm impressed I was able to squeeze this entire speech about super-heroes playing "King Of The Mountain" into a single page. I really do love this idea of an opportunist turning the "Let's You And Him Fight" mentality to his advantage by appealing to losers until he has people on his payroll. It felt like a decent way of Deconstructing random super-hero fistfights that occur all the time in stories, and wanted to explore that particular element of the genre in this arc. You don't just walk off the kind of injuries or legal bills you'd get in a fight like that, and it leaves you open to the sort of person who'd prey on people needing money. Plus when you look at most Let's You And Him Fight stories, it comes off like the heroes don't have a lot of impulse control or foresight (Lookin' at you, Marvel) so they'd be exactly the kind of person to fall for something like this.
In general I like going into the "King Of The Mountain" mentality on heroes, think it's something you really do see in the genre... Eh, I dunno, tired, cold, and repeating myself. Hope you folks enjoy~
