I am... REALLY curious to see what the response is like on this page. Mostly in that while I think personally it makes Rick look pretty sympathetic - scared enough to try to mug people but so bad at it he ends having less money than he started with - I could still see some people taking issue with the fact he's even trying it. I dunno, really curious here.
Will say the idea of Rick giving a few bucks to a homeless guy was my idea, was something thrown out early on when we were kind of afraid he was too much of a lech for people to really get into. Seems like readers are enjoying him though so guess by now not really necessarily, but I'm still pretty happy with this page on the whole, think both puts over the situation some more while also being pretty funny. In general this was kind of designed to be a more comedic chapter, despite what you might think by the terrified guy who was burnt and covered in water being thrown in a trunk in the last page. ... Or by a montage of a guy wandering around town with a gun all day for that matter.
Be sure to swing by for the next page. Like, absolutely get a look at that one please. That is the page we've been building up to for a long time now and we really can't wait to get feedback on it.
Yeah, this entire page is clearly just one long Pet The Dog moment for Rick. ^^ I've been pleasantly surprised by how much fans have come around to liking Rick; when I started the chapter I was afraid he was too brainless for the audience to get behind him. I wrote this page entirely because I thought he was coming off as too douchey and thought he needed something to establish that he wasn't that bad of a guy.
When fans were really getting into Rick I actually considered dropping this page, but Martin really liked the script and that's what made me wanna keep it. On reflection the page is pretty necessary to help establish Rick's character; he's desperate and backed into a corner and doesn't really think about the consequences... But at the end of the day he's too nice to genuinely hurt someone. Even if he is cynical enough to think about it.
Artwork wise I'm surprised at how good this looks. The gun looked like trash originally but Martin got me to edit it. Originally Rick had a more modern handgun but now it's a revolver; Martin pitched the idea that he was left the gun by his Grandad. I also really like that background in the panel with Cassie.
If you've been keeping up with all the Wotch references, Cassie is another character from that webcomic. Granted, she looks NOTHING like the girl here, aside from both being Goths. No wonder Rick didn't recognize her. Speaking of references, that eagle-themed superhero was vaguely based off Guy Gardner and the guy he was talking to off Kyle Rayner. I genuinely don't know what the Eagle-dude's power is, but I do like the design. Might have him show up in a future chapter to job to someone.
Also that register in the fifth panel is my register from work. Felt weird to actually draw that. Like, worlds colliding.
I feel bad for Rick, yes he was a bit of a douchebag. But he does not deserve this and I think Phil, the Prince of Insufficient Light had this all planed.
From what Rick said in page 6 Phil was just some low level thug with some ideas and Rick's granddad was one with the real power. Something that Phil could really never have, so this hole being budy budy with Rick then just do this to him. This is just petty revenge.
