Hm.... Yeah, lot to discuss going into this one. But... Main thing is I was ready to wrap up the parent discusison. Like, I couldn't even give the kids running out a full page; just cut to them leaving. It's mostly because cutting away was just easier to write, but I thought the joke was also just funnier. ^^ Yeah, one particular reader has been complaining that there's been too much talking in the comic in general and not enough of the kids kicking butt, so past time we got to the latter.
Jenny we can see is taking this mission kinda personally. I think she's the one more conflicted about the parent thing than anyone else. I think she's someone who considers family really important to her, especially since growing up her only family was her dad. So he's deeply close to her heart, but so are the kids she works with, and of course Jake. She's the one who's most committed to making sure everybody comes out of this okay; the people they're protecting, their families, and the team. I think she's the one member of the group who will absolutely not compromise on this. She's not letting one connection die for anyone else.
She's an easy character to forget, so I wanted to give her some moments of looking cool in this chapter. Lore is mostly the one making speeches but with Marvelous Man out, maybe it's best to give the other kids time for that, hence Andy's big soapbox moment in the last page.
Everyone's kind of transitioning into their costumes mid-transit which... yeah, I just really wanted to have a big where the kids were all fighting bad guys in their costumes again. It's been a while since we've seen them fully dressed.
One touch I like in the fourth panel is Valerie's expression and how she's the only one shouting. I think while the other kids have powers that naturally transition into moving quickly, Valerie has a REALLY hard time relying on her rocket-blasts and is finding it rough to control.
It'll be a liiiittle bit more before we find out what the deal is with this chapter's villain. ^^
Yeah, like Adam said kind of an awkward cut forward here, but he was in a hurry to get to the action (which is still not quiiite coming up just yet, but soon). Doesn't leave a gigantic amount to say on it given that but lemme see what I've got...
This page is kind of interesting to talk about in that I went fairly heavy on experimenting with the background on this one while coloring it and was very pleased with it... then I did so to a much greater degree in the page after it to where this one just looks underwhelming by comparison, even after having gone back and added the crosswalk in post. Weird how that works out. Still am happy with it though, improving backgrounds is something I've been really wanting to prioritize for some time now and this scene transition felt like a good time to really dig into it. Really been equally wanting to do that in Wright as Rayne and while its next page is a lot more involved background-wise the current focus of the chapter still hasn't really allowed for it very much yet.
Funny thing, for a bit now we've been drawing pages at much larger sizes than usual as kind of experiment with getting more involved with details. This page marked the end of that practice (mostly, the next one was mistakenly also done that way) in large part because Manga Studio just was being very uncooperative with it. Was very routinely having the program lock up and crash for both of us, especially when working with shading, gradients, and text, and it was just turning into an enormous hassle, especially for me. Don't think there's a very noticeable difference here having gone back to the old style but it's still disappointing.
Like Adam said, this chapter's villain isn't quite showing up just yet but anyone have any further thoughts on them for the moment?
ROFL, I think the cutaway really works personally, it's both hilarious and a much needed boost of optimism after how dreary the conversations were going. Let the kids kick tail
Mmmm I am of two minds on this, on the one head I would have like to see the parents try to stop there kids and the other hand the cutaway was good.
And I think the villain is Decay Conductor and she is ether just trying to get MM to come out and fight her not knowing he is in jail or wherever he is.
Or she wants to kick the kids asses because they kicked MM's ass, and burns her knowing the man who kicked her ass was beaten by babies.
